What Mercury retrograde means
About three times a year, Mercury appears to move backwards across the sky for around three weeks. It doesn't really reverse: Earth is overtaking it. Mercury rules messages, travel, contracts and technology. When it's retrograde, plans slip, emails go astray and old contacts reappear.
Back up your phone, read contracts twice and leave extra time for travel. It's a great window for anything with "re" in front: review, revise, reconnect.
The shadow is the stretch of sky Mercury covers three times: once going forward before the retrograde (pre-shadow), once backwards, and once forward again after it (post-shadow). Many astrologers treat the shadow weeks as a softer version of the retrograde itself.
The 2027 Mercury retrogrades in detail
First Mercury retrograde: February 9 to March 3, in Pisces and Aquarius
- Pre-shadow begins:
- Stations retrograde: at 5° Pisces
- Stations direct: at 20° Aquarius
- Post-shadow ends:
In Pisces, thinking turns dreamy and vague. Wonderful for art and reflection; write the facts down for everything else. In Aquarius, tech, group chats and friendships glitch. Back up everything and clear up a misunderstanding.
Second Mercury retrograde: June 10 to July 4, in Cancer and Gemini
- Pre-shadow begins:
- Stations retrograde: at 6° Cancer
- Stations direct: at 27° Gemini
- Post-shadow ends:
In Cancer, family conversations and old memories come back. Good for reconnecting with relatives; bad for moving house. In Gemini, Mercury's own sign, the mix-ups multiply: double bookings, crossed wires, too many tabs open. Simplify.
Third Mercury retrograde: October 7 to October 28, in Scorpio and Libra
- Pre-shadow begins:
- Stations retrograde: at 4° Scorpio
- Stations direct: at 19° Libra
- Post-shadow ends:
In Scorpio, secrets and shared money come up for review. Conversations go deep; choose your words with care. In Libra, relationships and agreements get renegotiated. Revisit a contract or an unspoken deal with a partner.
